Russia launched another major missile, drone attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure
Russia launched another “major” attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Thursday, knocking out power to more than a million homes, according to Ukrainian officials.
Thursday’s attack, which involved more than 200 missiles and drones, marked the second attack on Ukraine’s power grid in less than two weeks.
Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko said on Facebook that “attacks on power plants are happening all over Ukraine.” He added that emergency power cuts have been implemented across the country.
The affected areas include the Lviv region in western Ukraine, the northwestern Rivne region, the border region of Volyn and the Ivano Frankivsk region in the west, according to the Associated Press.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said that Kalibr cruise missiles with multiple weapons, releasing a number of small bombs over a wide area, hit the target population. He described the attack as a “stealth escalation.”
Zelenskyy asked the West to speed up the delivery of promised air defense weapons in response to the attack.
“Each such attack proves that air defense systems are needed now in Ukraine, where they save lives, not in the last places,” Zelenskyy said in Telegram.

Andrii Yermak, the head of Ukraine’s presidential office, accused Russia of stockpiling missiles for winter fighting. He also said that Russia was “helped by its crazy friends, including those from North Korea.”

It is common for Russia to invade Ukraine during the bitter winter months in an attempt to deny residents access to hot water and drinking water.
The attack is also aimed at destroying Ukraine’s production of missiles, drones, armored vehicles and other military equipment.
