Report – Scheffler-McIlroy vs. Koepka-DeChambeau for $10M crypto prize

The PGA Tour-LIV Golf made-for-TV matchup on Dec. 17 featuring four of the biggest names in the sport will have a purse worth at least $10 million in cryptocurrency, Front Office Sports reported Wednesday.

The newly named Crypto.com Showdown will see PGA Tour’s Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy take on LIV’s Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau in the 18-hole event at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas.

The fund will be paid in CRO cryptocurrency, the sponsor said. It is not clear how much the winning and losing teams will receive.

The prize money is higher than most tournaments on the PGA Tour, except for major and signature events, which are usually $8 million-$9 million. Winners of PGA events often take home more than $1 million.

Crypto.com CMO Steve Kalifowitz told Front Office Sports that players don’t have to keep crypto and can sell or trade their winnings.

The tournament, which will air on TNT at 6 pm ET, is structured as a Ryder Cup-style event, with four-ball, singles and more.

In the same event in 2018, Phil Mickleson defeated Tiger Woods in the first edition of “The Match” and took home the entire $9 million prize. In February this year, McIlroy won $2.4 million after defeating Max Homa, Rose Zhang and Lexi Thompson.
