The former president of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, who was the prime minister of Luxembourg for almost two decades, criticized the reintroduction of border checks in Germany and other European Union states.
“I would like this to stop,” he told dpa. “Anyone who thinks they can arrest large numbers of refugees and other people with warrants at the legal border is wrong.”
He pointed out that smugglers do everything possible to avoid official police checks. This is especially true in the region around Luxembourg, where there is a lot of traffic crossing the borders of Germany, France and Belgium.
Juncker expressed his concern, saying: “It saddens me that it seems normal to reintroduce border checks. And I don’t want to get used to it.”
Germany also introduced checks at all German borders on September 16, guaranteeing this with a limit on “irregular migration” and internal security protection. Some EU states also regulate their borders as well.
The Schengen agreement on unrestricted border crossing, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year, allows border checks only in the event of a “serious threat to public order or internal security” in the first six months.
