Gilmore Girls’ Harvard-Yale Game: Reminiscing about Wild Times
It’s that time of year again – and how lucky it is for us Gilmore Girls rewatch is in line with the actual Harvard-Yale game.
Ivies Harvard University and Yale University held their annual football game on Saturday, November 23, to the delight of many fans.
When the Crimson and the Bulldogs face off on the gridiron, Us Weekly I can’t help but remember the great times since Gilmore Girls‘his stage of the game.
In season 4 of the WB-turned-CW series, Rory (Alexis Bledel) and mother Lorelai (Lauren Graham) hit the big game with the latter’s parents, Emily (Kelly Bishopand Richard (Edward Hermann), in an episode titled “Ted Koppel’s Big Night Out.” (Rory, if you remember, was a freshman at Yale at the time, which is where Richard also attended.)
“So, I have to go watch the football game, but at least I’ll hang out with you before the finals,” Lorelai said with a laugh. “Yeah, and what’s the last football game? An hour, an hour and a half? Longer than an hour and a half? Are you kidding?”
When the Gilmore girls arrive at the game, they soon discover that even the hardest times and revelations happen on the football field.
Check back with us for some great memories below:
Clothes
For starters, Lorelai was “shocked” to see her parents all decked out in Yale gear, including sweatshirts, hats and scarves. Emily also wore a button that said, “Harvard go to hell.” However, the elder Gilmores disagreed with their daughter’s clothing.
“Lorelai, what are you wearing?” Emily asked. “You are wearing red.”
Crimson is Harvard’s main color, which Richard declared was a “dangerous” decision when they were basing Yale in all its blue and white glory.
“Look Rory, [who] wearing Yale colors,” Emily added, referring to Bledel’s white sweater and jeans. “Rory looks perfect.”
Emily then made Lorelai put on her navy coat with buttons to hide any red marks.
‘Fun Flask’
While Emily and Richard were remarkably tight-lipped about the proper place to drink alcohol, they brought a flask to humble Dan’s honor. The first shot prompts Richard to start singing “Bulldog” before Lorelai ends up swiping the flask to spend the day.
The Mother of All Tailgates
Emily and Richard tailgate differently than most, bringing in a private chef, a maid and a giant RV camper to cook steak — spelled “Y” for Yale, naturally — and drink bloody Marys. One piece of meat was specially cooked by the “current Dan” mascot, a real bulldog.
At one point, Emily even criticized the hired help for “dumping” a bag of Fig Newton cookies that Rory brought to the plate without cooling. He laughed, “Take them, fix them.”
Meet Ex
The biggest shock of the episode was the arrival of Pennilyn Lott (Linda Gehringer), former girlfriend of Richard’s classmate. Emily kept trying to keep the communication short, but she was shocked when she learned that Pennilyn knew about Lorelai’s plans to open an inn. It was revealed that Richard had told Pennilyn about the construction progress during one of their secret lunches each year.
“Lorelai, what were you thinking?” Emily scolded her daughter. “We’re not talking to Pennilyn Lott. We meet him once a year, say hello, goodbye and that’s it. We don’t have conversations, we talk about our lives. We’re not messing with Pennilyn Lott. We don’t refer to Pennilyn Lott as anything like ‘Pennilyn Lott,’ and I’d be happy to remember that.”
Introducing ‘The Naked Guy’ – And Reading From Another
During lunch, Rory runs into his friend Marty (Wayne Wilcox), whom Lorelai remembers as “The Naked Guy.” (In the season 4 premiere, Rory meets Marty after he ends up naked following a back-to-school party.)
“Why does my daughter always call you ‘Naked Guy?'” asked Richard, which made Marty remember the legend. “Oh, please, it’s nothing. I was naked for a month my sophomore year. … I and a group of like-minded young men decided to oppose the new dress code by wearing silk ties and nothing else.”
Fast Travel
Just as Richard made a big reveal about Pennilyn, Emily scolded Lorelai for getting involved and starting the mess by talking to her in the first place. As a result, Lorelai left unexpectedly – and agreed to have dinner with Jason “Digger” Styles (Chris Eigeman).
Jason was Richard’s business rival, whom he had previously refused to date out of family loyalty. And yes, he brought a “fun flask” on the official tour.
Paris and Professor
After a quiet game with his grandparents, Rory filled his mom in on the details later that night. Hanging up, she saw her roommate Paris Geller (Liza Weil) in a dark hallway kissing one of her professors, Asher Fleming (Michael York). Paris was in a relationship with high school boyfriend Jamie at the time.
