Matt Gaetz is withdrawing his name from consideration as the next US attorney general
Former U.S. representative Matt Gaetz has withdrawn from the race to become the country’s attorney general under President-elect Donald Trump after several days of concern about his choice, even among Republicans.
The announcement Thursday came after the House Ethics Committee issued a report on allegations of sexual misconduct and illegal drug use by Gaetz.
The politician said he made his decision after meeting with Republican senators.
“Although the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was an unfair distraction from the important work of the Trump/Vance transition. There is no time to waste on unnecessary conflicts in Washington, thus I will be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General,” he wrote to X.
More to come.
