Hollywood couple Humphrey Bogart again Lauren Bacall they are best known for their films in the 1940s, but their son, Stephen Humphrey Bogarthe is still shocked that his parent’s legacy has been lost among today’s youth.
“I went to the doctor and the assistant came in and asked him, and the doctor said, ‘Hey, do you know who this is?’ He’s Humphrey Bogart’s son.’ And then he says, ‘Who?’” Bogart, 75, said to himself Us Weekly while promoting his new documentary Bogart: Life Comes Bright. “This is like two months ago. And this is a wise woman.”
Stephen added that when asked if the names of Lauren Bacall, Marlon Brandoor Dustin Hoffman the bell rang, the answer remained the same. “So kids don’t really know because it’s hard when you look at your phone and want to see the latest Marvel,” he explained. “Not that I have anything against Marvel. I used to collect comic books, but they never know the past.”
Clarifying that his surprise at Hollywood’s lack of knowledge is not limited to his parents but to any movie star of yesteryear, he joked that the “lack of knowledge” from younger generations “blows his mind” all the time.
Those well versed in the history of cinema will, of course, recognize the names of Stephen’s parents immediately: Humphrey is known for films like these. Now, Stephen is looking to explore more than just his parents’ romance Life in the Light. Directed by Kathryn Fergusonthe film also delves into Humphrey’s relationships with all four of his wives, as well as his mother, and how they influenced his career path.
Stephen, for his part, hopes that the doctor will “allow people to look back on their lives and trace the traces of people in their lives that have brought them forward to where they are today.”
While thinking about his father’s career of working and guiding the greats like John Huston again Michael CurtizStephen gave Us some insight into which director in today’s generation he thinks his father would have worked well with.
“It’s possible Greta Gerwig [if she was] doing the right thing,” said Stephen. “I think the directors and the people who think … he wasn’t there [an] action movie kind of guy. He went into a thought process.” Another possibility? “Spielberg maybe,” he said. “Because he’s not in CGI and all that stuff, people aren’t.”
There were other directors that Stephen thought his father would never meet. “No James CameronI don’t think so,” he quipped, before noting that, for Humphrey, it had more to do with the quality of the writing.
“George Raft I didn’t want to do it The Maltese Falcon because he didn’t want to work with the first director,” added Stephen before joking, “Well, the first director John Huston. You’re pretty high up there, George, aren’t you?”
