Mother says she often confuses her daughter’s sister: ‘My mini-me’

Mother and daughter share why people think they are sisters.

California native Kelly Cantu, 40, and her daughter Madison, 20, say they are often mistaken for sisters.

Kelly Cantu said she was only 20 years old when she had her daughter — and she was happy to have her own “mini me,” as reported by Jam Press.

That wasn’t just wishful thinking, the outlet noted.

As the daughter grew older, the similarities between the two began to show.

Finally, when young Madison turned 13 and mother Kelly was only 33, people began to question whether the two were sisters.

“He was in high school when it started,” Kelly Cantu, a content creator, told What’s the Jam.

“When I picked her up, I was always mistaken for her sister or another student,” he said.

“We both found it very funny.”

Madison Cantu said, “My friends and classmates – when they first met my mom – they always asked if she was my sister. And their parents always did the same!”

The two say it hasn’t stopped since. They said it’s not only happening in public, but also online.

Said Kelly Cantu, “Whenever we’re out and I call her ‘Baby Girl’ and someone finds out I’m her mom, people always say, ‘I thought you were sisters.’

My mother said it was embarrassing sometimes.

“When Madison was little, I laughed,” she said. “But I get embarrassed sometimes. Especially when people start asking how old I was when I had him.”

Little Cantu said he was very happy to hear it from time to time, though.

She said, “I think it’s funny, and I hope that good genetics will rub off on me. When people find out that you’re my parent and not my sister, they’re going to freak out.”

And “they often comment on how young he looks.”

He added, “I feel honored because you are a very beautiful woman. Everyone says it and I know it too. I hope to look good when I’m 40!”

They say mother daughter and daughter often come out in matching colors.

Kelly Cantu, who now lives in England, said, “I love to match … I was trying to match or at least wear colors that match the color. I actually just ordered us to wear Christmas jumpers and Christmas pajamas,” she added.

She also said, “I once dyed my hair black to look like Madison, too.”

They said they underestimated the similarities.

Kelly Cantu said, “My mom always tells me how she can’t get over the way we look and act. I think even more now … I would say that my daughter and I are best friends and we go everywhere together and we do the same.”

People have said that they find it strange that they are close to each other, said the mother.

But both women say they don’t mind that – as they feel they are “each other’s best friends.”
