2 dead, 10 injured after two shootings near New Orleans’ second line
New Orleans police are investigating two shootings along a popular route Sunday afternoon that left two dead and 10 others injured.
The first shooting happened around 3:38 p.m. in the 1800 block of Almonaster Avenue, according to the police department.
The police who were assigned to the Nine Times Second Line parade responded to the shooting in the area and found eight people shot.
All eight victims were taken to a local hospital by ambulance, while the ninth victim arrived at a local hospital in a private vehicle.

About 45 minutes later, police responded to another report of shots fired at the intersection of Almonaster and Florida streets. Two people were found shot during the second incident, one died at the scene and the other died at the hospital after leaving.
Police said the third victim in the second shooting was seen at the hospital and was listed in stable condition as of Sunday night.
As part of the investigation, the rally was immediately shut down, police said.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said at a press conference Sunday evening that the Nine Times Second Line is one of the city’s largest second lines, bringing in thousands of spectators.
Kirkpatrick said the police have a history “of this second line” and knew “there could be violence,” so all 66 officers in the Fifth District, along with about 30 additional officers, were assigned to the event.
“It’s a great event. There’s no doubt about it, and we want to keep it an amazing event,” Kirkpatrick said.

The police have not yet found the suspects or found a reason for the shooting. It is still unknown whether the two shootings were related.
“The investigation is early and ongoing,” New Orleans police said in a news release.
Gov. Louisiana’s Jeff Landry was aware of the shootings and condemned the violence in a column on X Sunday evening.
“A tragic incident in the St. Roch area tonight. Sharon and I are praying for all involved and thank the first responders who rushed to the scene. The violence must stop,” he wrote.
