AMB. CALLISTA GINGRICH: Catholic voters were crucial to Trump’s victory. Democrats should pay attention

The election of Donald J. Trump on November 5 marked the beginning of a new golden age in America. In his election night victory speech in Palm Beach, Fla., President-elect Trump pledged to fight for all citizens, their families and their futures.

“I will not rest until we have delivered the strong, safe and prosperous America that our children deserve and deserve,” Trump said. “This will be America’s golden age.”

Voters have given Trump a huge mandate to implement an America First mentality. Across all voters, Trump made big gains among key demographics, including Catholic voters.

As I wrote on Oct. 10, “President Donald J. Trump is making significant strides with Catholics across America. … This surge of Catholic support rallying around Trump is significant given the religious demographics of key battleground states.”

Nationally, although Catholics were deeply divided in the 2020 election, in 2024, Trump won the national Catholic vote by 15 percent. According to a poll conducted by the Washington Post, 56 percent of Catholics voted for Trump, compared to 41 percent for Kamala Harris.

Catholics make up the largest religious denomination in the United States, consisting of about 52 million people.

Consider that in Pennsylvania, 24% of adults are Catholic. The percentages of Catholic adults in Wisconsin and Michigan are 25% and 18% respectively. Trump won all three states—and won over Catholics by a large margin.

HARRIS OFFICIALLY ENDS ONE DAY AFTER TRUMP’S VICTORY

According to Fox News Voter Analysis, Catholic voters favor Trump by 13 percent in Pennsylvania, 16 points in Wisconsin, and 20 points in Michigan.

As Brian Burch, president of CatholicVote, said, “There’s an electoral trend emerging here that Republicans, if they’re smart, will hold on to.”

During the campaign, Harris could not hide from the American voters that he was against Catholicism, even telling the students, “Christ is King!” that they were “in the wrong meeting.”

In contrast, Trump’s commitment to religious freedom was evident to voters across America in his first administration and during the campaign.

In his first term, Trump defended the rights of doctors, nurses, and teachers to act according to their conscience. He appointed three Supreme Court justices who were determined to protect our God-given right to worship. He signed an executive order defining international religious freedom as necessary to moral and national security and called a meeting at the United Nations dedicated to ending religious persecution around the world and protecting religious freedom.

During the campaign, Trump nominated Catholic convert JD Vance, whose wife was raised Hindu, as his running mate. He launched the Catholic for Trump coalition to reaffirm his commitment to protecting religious freedom and promoting family values. (Harris tried to do the same, but his disrespectful message apparently fell through.) He showed his support for Catholic Charities by attending Al Smith’s dinner with Church leaders. And after the assassination attempt this summer, he said the stray bullet had something to do with Divine Providence.

Catholic voters played an important role in electing President Donald J. Trump, sending a clear message about their importance in shaping America’s future.
