Big fans of film and television will remember the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that have been going on since about 2023, shutting down productions across the country. What you might not realize, unless you’re into the trade books, is that Netflix has taken the strikes as an opportunity to tone down foreign brands, meaning the streamer is now loaded to the gills with new and exciting content from studios. outside of Hollywood. One of the best Spanish language films, with the title There is no placelaunched as a Netflix original in September 2023, and has since turned the heads of many moviegoers around the world.

For those who have never heard There is no place on Netflix, the film is a powerful thriller with a few limited characters, similar to something like a classic 2000 film. Get rid of itor in 2012 Life of Pi. In There is no placea couple named Mia and Nico board a cargo ship bound for Ireland, to escape the many horrors happening in their country.
The film takes place in a dystopian future that sees a global catastrophe of some kind throw part of Europe into a dangerous wasteland run by fascists, causing a couple to fear for the life and safety of their unborn child.
However, once inside the cargo ship, Mia and Nico discover that their troubles have only just begun. First, the couple is separated as the corrupt military officers chase the crates and try to kill a bunch of people stealing them.
Later, a huge storm across the East Atlantic causes the boat to capsize, sending Mia crashing into the sea next to a bunch of random foreign shipments. As the narrative of There is no place on Netflix builds to its terrifying climax, Mia must learn to survive using makeshift tools and items inside her crate, while being pushed by ocean waves in the middle of nowhere.
Mixed Reactions
There is no place premiered on Netflix in September of 2023, and immediately received a mixed response from critics. Today, the film holds an average score of 69 percent from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with some viewers arguing that the writing and directing choices are not strong enough to sustain involvement in the film. Despite these reviews, critics seem to agree that Anna Castillo’s stellar performance as Mia is the high watermark, as much of the narrative hinges on her harrowing journey across a strange ocean.

I myself had never heard of it There is no place until recently, when I was randomly scrolling through Netflix originals looking for something new and exciting. I’d say the critics generally got this right, as Mia’s journey is the most interesting part of the film by a long shot, though I wish we could have seen the ruined remains of Spain in the first act. Whichever way you cut it, this film is a fun and engaging watch, and at just 109 minutes of running time, it never feels like it’s outstaying its welcome.
