Jude Law seems to be one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood…he’s had a ton of roles, and to his credit, he seems to make each of them very different from those that have come before. For example, he played a surprising villain in a hit movie Captain Marvel. Jude Law is proud of the Marvel villain he’s bringing to life, but has regrets, saying in a recent Variety interview, “I wish I was allowed to have more fun with the part.”
Before expressing that regret, Jude Law expressed how much he enjoyed playing the villainous Yon-Rogg, saying “That, to me, was the height of Marvel.” As for the studio, he noted that “I don’t think there was much more they could have gotten” from his heel-turned-character. Still, he “wanted to focus more on the humor,” and went on to explain how he wished he had played the character differently and how uncomfortable his goofy costume was.
Although Jude Law emphasizes that Captain Marvel “It was a really good experience,” he went on to explain that he thinks his character could have been portrayed with more humor. “I wanted him to be a slave,” he said. That makes sense, actually, since the Yon-Rogg we’ve seen on screen seems to have exactly two gears: a tough mentor and a screaming jerk.
Beyond the changes Jude Law wanted to make in his own Captain Marvel character, also had a complaint shared by many MCU stars: namely, that the clothes they had to wear were too uncomfortable. “It is difficult to get into those suits because they are made of thick rubber,” he said. His future uniform would be uncomfortable no matter what, but he went on to explain how the discomfort was amplified by his stunt training.
“You go to stunt camp for a few months, where you do all these stunts and learn to do all these things,” he said. However, as soon as Jude Law donned his Marvel character’s helmet, he realized that the thick rubber costume was restricting his flexibility: “I can’t touch my toes!” Before shooting, this left him with a nagging question: “How am I going to do all this wearing this thing?”
Jude Law’s struggle with his Marvel costume finally had a happy ending: “you see,” he said. It’s hard to deny that he mastered the rubber suit, leading to a very memorable fight scene Captain Marvel. While returning with flashbacks in between Miraclesthe awkwardness of the costume may explain why we didn’t see a future appearance of Yon-Rogg. If Law decides to come back again, though, his character could make for a fun card as the MCU continues to explore the boundaries of its universe.
While we really enjoyed this movie, Jude Law’s complaints about his Captain Marvel character seem to be true…other villains like Loki and Agatha have proven that MCU villains can be menacing while still being very funny. Yes, given the historical failure of Miraclesthe chances of his character returning to the big screen seem lower than ever. With a rumored Marvel reboot right around the corner, though, it’s always possible that the return of Law’s venerable heel is closer than we realize.
